The term Model Village refers to communities once built by wealthy landowners to house their workers, as well as the miniature model village tourist attractions I visited as a child. It may once have evoked an idealised community, but over time these associations have become clouded and contradictory. The inexorable rise in housing inequality, insecurity and homelessness raise questions about what it even means to be part of a physical community now. Model village extract from Land Ground Earth Soil (2019). My interest in this springs from previous research for Land Ground Earth Soil, which includes a theory in evolutionary psychology that 150 is found to be the optimal number of people who can live in a community together, based on trust and moral obligation.&nbsp;Historic records reveal that 150 was not only the average village size in the 18th century, but also in the Domesday Book of 1086. Interestingly this is also found to apply to social media, irrespective of how many ‘friends’ or ‘followers’ a person appears to have.&nbsp; &nbsp;Unlike digital communities, which pervade so much of our collective consciousness; physical communities, as in the geographic places where people dwell, can seem arbitrary and undynamic by comparison. The models represent types or categories of buildings and structures (with the occasional specific exception). They are out of scale with their counterparts in the real world yet retain their recognisable proportions. The absence of scale strips away the power that comes with size from the larger buildings. Collected together, the remaining short shorts take on a comedic uniformity. The buildings look like soft furnishings, reminiscent of fancy homeware shop cushions that speak to our desire for cosiness and wellbeing, for hygge - perhaps as comfort in these divided and insecure times. Land ownership is notoriously secretive, and&nbsp; largely kept out of the public eye. Even the different language we use to talk about the ground beneath our feet has helped to perpetuate this.&nbsp; &nbsp;For example, we use the word ‘earth’ when talking about climate change, ‘ground’ for roadworks and ‘soil’ for agriculture. While ‘land’ is used when talking about ownership, whether perceived or real.&nbsp;The gaps that open up between the use of these words effectively silo pressing issues that should be seen as part of a whole, like homelessness, tax-avoidance and climate change. &nbsp; &nbsp;The project uses montage and juxtaposition to challenge this dissonance and to draw out overlooked connections and contradictions.&nbsp;It urges the viewer to remember that we are all stakeholders in our land, ground, earth, soil - whichever word we use. Obstructions proposes that public space can be divided into categories and sub-categories, and it examines the level of ‘transaction’ within each as well as the presence of obstructions. &nbsp;&nbsp; The gallery pages contain pictures of obstructions informally grouped by their intentions, or ‘prescriptions’ as Bruno Latour described them; as well as their primary material, ie, signs, plastic, tape, wood, glass, planting, stone or human in uniform. The images are placed closely together as typologies to reveal their variety and ubiquity, and to highlight their normalisation and subsequent invisibility. Obstructions of King’s Cross concentrates on a London area that has undergone rapid gentrification in recent years. Ready in time to celebrate the first of the college’s two annual degree shows. &nbsp; &nbsp; The idea came from research I was doing into the proliferation of local street signs that tell us NO and DON’T for my MA project Obstructions, and I shortlisted these three. In makeshift cardboard villages outside the luxury brands, they hang out with friends, video-call their families and trade goods.&nbsp; &nbsp;The film was shot on the go and I cut it quickly together in my Hong Kong hotel room the night before the event, so please forgive its roughness! The focus of the project’s physical presence is the pamphlet1 entitled&nbsp;By Opening this Publication you are Agreeing to... which challenges the reader to break the seal of the transparent pack that contains it.&nbsp; &nbsp; The pamphlet’s text appropriates the language that exists in the grey area between implied and informed consent. It adapts extracts of Facebook and Google’s own terms &amp; conditions, with the catch-all disclaimer We reserve all rights not expressly granted to you given its own special page.&nbsp; &nbsp; This is because if it were de-jargoned it would probably say something like ‘We reserve the right to deny or refute anything else with you that we haven’t already covered here, and which might come up later’.&nbsp; &nbsp; The pack, which contains the pamphlet and stickers, formed the physical material of P Group’s2 output; gathered together and exhibited with other groups’ work in the MA Work-in-Progress publication, which took the form of an A5 box.&nbsp; &nbsp; The pack also provides the means to connect to the group’s corresponding digital material on a local pirate box. For example in a workplace or educational institution, or on your daily commute. Or you may be sharing space with complete strangers. &nbsp; &nbsp;Like all sentient beings, you are inately territorial. You make conscious and unconscious choices when you enter a place about the space within it that you want for yourself. Your own temporary piece of real estate. &nbsp; &nbsp;These choices are determined by many factors, including the purpose of the visit, time to be spent there and even any desired outcome from the visit. &nbsp; &nbsp;The project started with an 8 hour timelapse in a local coffee shop, to map how people used the space on a typical weekday. It revealed how popular seats depend on factors such as time of day, how many in a group, and the reason for the visit. From this I developed an animated schematic, with the tables/bar in yellow and the seats/customers around them represented as coloured squares. Its cushion conceals a pressure sensor, connected to a wireless wifi-enabled micro-controller.&nbsp; &nbsp;The micro-controller is connected to an IO and Javascript node, with a dashboard to display the number of individual sitters, individual sitting times, and total sitting time. https://pennyhartley.com/Sleepwalkers Sat, 07 Nov 2020 16:35:23 +0000 pennyhartley https://pennyhartley.com/Sleepwalkers Sleepwalkers (2017) Film, 3:25 mins, 16:9 This film1&nbsp;invites the viewer to contemplate the tension between our physical lives and our online lives - on our ever-present mobile phones.&nbsp; &nbsp; It is a mashup of original and found footage, graphic flash cards and zombie film clips, combined with a digital narration of my adapted extract from Georges Perec’s&nbsp;The Street2.&nbsp;This is the script: Observe the street, from time to time, with some concern for system perhaps./ Apply yourself. Take your time./ Note down the place, the time, the date, the weather. Note down what you can see. Anything worthy of note going on. Do you know how to see what’s worthy of note? Is there anything that strikes you?/ Nothing strikes you. You don’t know how to see./ You must set about it more slowly, almost stupidly. Force yourself to write down what is of no interest, what is most obvious, most common, most colourless./ The street: try to describe the street, what it’s made of, what it’s used for. The people in the street. The cars. The buildings. The shops. The cafés. Make an effort to exhaust the subject, even if that seems grotesque, or pointless, or stupid. You still haven’t looked at anything, you’ve merely picked out what you’ve long ago picked out./ Force yourself to see more flatly./ Detect a rhythm: the passing of cars. Count the cars. Look at the number plates./&nbsp; Read what’s written in the street: newspaper kiosks, posters, traffic signs, graffiti, discarded handouts, shop signs./ Decipher a bit of the town. Its circuits: why do buses go from this place to that? Who chooses the routes, and by what criteria?/ The people in the streets: where are they coming from? Where are they going to? Who are they?/ People in a hurry. People going slowly. Parcels. Prudent people who’ve taken their macs. Dogs: they’re the only animal to be seen. You can’t see any birds – yet you know there are birds - &nbsp;and can’t hear them either.
